The newest addition in our house...

No, it is not a baby or another pet, it is my sewing room! Well, it is actually 1/2 of the guest room, but it is my own space. The "sweat shop" that was the dining room had gotten to be too much. We started the sewing station there not knowing how much I would take to it. It turned out that I really took to sewing and my collection of "stuff" and projects had gotten to be too overwhelming for our dining room.

My sweet mother-in-law was here this weekend and she helped talk me through what I could do with what little space and resources I had. So, Steve and I rearranged some things in the house and this is what we came up with. It is not much, but it is al mine:)

I have b1g ideas about painting this room and making fun curtains for it.
I have an entire dresser filled with fabric that is organized by color.
Ribbons and tools all have their own place now.
For those that are interested, I have so many items that I have practiced with that are just piling up. So, for kicks I am going to throw them on ebay. We will see what happens. There are 4 sets of these- 2 burps and one bib.
This is how they are packaged for now. I have every intention of coming up with something cuter soon.

Picture Recap

For starters, I heard Emerson stirring this morning so I went in to get her. What did I find? She was sitting up and playing with her toys. I know you are all thinking, what is the big deal? Well, she has been pulling up from sitting position for weeks now, but she has yet to get from laying down to sitting. So, this is a big day!

Sticking out her tongue was big this week. She did it all the time. In fact a sweet family was behind us in line at Walmart. Emy was kind of playing with the little girl. The girl asked me if I taught her to stick out her tongue. I told her "no" that she just figured it out. The little girl responded with, well you need to tell her that it isn't very nice.
So happy to be standing and playing with her toys
Smiling for daddy
I WISH this would not have turned out blurry. First, there is a huge section of what we call "wild woman" hair sticking out and second, she looks like she is trying to imitate the band Kiss with that tongue- hillarious. So excited
Trying to crawl
First time with mashed potatoes. She really did like them all though it does not look like it.
So sleepy. I also with that this one would not have come out blurry. Too sweet.
This weeks creation. I must say that I LOVE this outfit. The skirt is seperate from the onesie.Isn't the matching "E" adorable???

What on earth have we been up to?

I feel like we have been so busy. The thing about it is that we have nothing to show for it. Emerson is still not actually crawling, but she is still getting into everything. I cannot imagine what our world will become when she is truly mobile. Yikes.

For those mommies out there, you know how the kiddos go through different developmental changes at different times--ie, one facet excels while everything else is on the back burner? Well, a couple weeks ago was the physical development- the pulling up and attempting to crawl. Now Emy has taken a break from that and is on to verbal development. She is talking and babbling all the time. It is absolutely precious. In the car, she stares in the mirror that is in the back with her and just talks to herself. The sounds are so sweet. Her favorites right now are Dada, Baba, Yaya and she FINALLY got Mama yesterday. Obviously, none of these "words" mean anything to nothing to her yet, but they will soon.

Also in the language development category, Emy understands A LOT. I have been practicing asking her to do simple things or telling her to stop simple things and she is starting to understand things. I can ask her to put something somewhere and she will do it. It amazes me how smart babies are! So, once this language phase is over, I know that she will be back to physical development and will surprise us one day by crawling all over the place!

Anyways, I just wanted to check in and let everyone know what was happening since I have not posted with an update (other than pics) in a while. Hope your weeks are off to a great start.

New stats and more fussiness

Emerson had her 9 month check-up yesterday. For those of you interested in stats, they are as follows:

17 lbs 10 oz- 28% percentile
28 1/8in- 70% percentile

So, she is still long and lean. Of course, I worry about her weight, but the doctor keeps reassuring me that she if fine. Her growth since birth has consistently been at the same rate, so he predicts she will always be long and lean- lucky her.

In the beginning of the exam, the nurse was asking me all her developmental questions: "Is she crawling? Is she cruising? Does she eat finger foods?", etc. Then she got to the question, "Does she show stranger anxiety?" I literally laughed out loud. Later the nurse came over to Emy and laid her down to take her measurements. Instantly, Emerson started screaming eventhough I was standing right there and holding her hand. The nurse looked at me and said, "Yep, she has it pretty bad." Oh well, I guess it is normal. Annoying, but normal.

So, after the drama with the growth spurt, feeding changes and sleep changes a couple weeks ago I figured that we were probably set for a little while. Wrong. Since Saturday Emerson has been oddly fussy. Not cying fussy, but whiny fussy. It is not just right before nap time like usual, but all the time. Even right after she wakes up. This is really abnormal for her. This is the first time in her life that she has been like this. She is normally so content and pleasant with whatever is going on around her.

After her appointment yesterday, we know that she does not have an ear infection. One thought is that she could be teething on the top, but when her two lower teeth came in she was not like this at all. What about sleep? Does she need her naps to be increased back to 4 hours instead of 3 hours total? What about the movement thing? Is she just frustrated that she can't get around like she wants too? I am at a total loss....I would love some advice or suggestions. Shoot me a comment or an email if you get a chance.

If practice makes perfect...

Then I really need lots more practice. At least I am having fun along the way though. Here are some of what I have been working on with my new sewing obsession...

This was my very first creation. You can't really tell, but it is a sweet lavender pattern. It is really plain though, so I am trying to think of something that I could add to it to spice it up. Ideas?

This is a sweet little infant bib that snaps at the neck. The back is lined with terry cloth. This takes so little fabric, I am planning on making a bunch more.
This is a burp cloth trimed in ribbon. I am not sure that I like trimming in ribbon this thin. As you can see in the next pic it is really hard (for me at least) to get the stiches straight.
This is a precious little dress I made for Emerson. I love the fun fabric combinations. The main fabric has brightly colored pinafores all over it. This was challenging for a beginner with all the ruffles, but I did it! If you look closely you will see tons of mistakes...but the fabric pattern hides most of them and it is still very wearable.
Action shot in the dress
Another one
One more
These are those cute little crayon rolls that you see in boutiques. I made two for my nieces that are coming to visit tomorrow. Once again, these are not even close to perfect, but they made for good practice because there is a ton of stitching involved.
